KEYNOTE TOPIC:

Professional Educator or Service Provider?: Demonstrating Success in Our Work With Students

Student affairs educators, including those in cooperative and experiential education, have long focused on providing excellent services that support the professional and educational maturation of students. Such maturation is a complex learning process outside of the classroom that practitioners seek to better understand, articulate, and demonstrate to stakeholders. Assessment of the impact of our programs and services is critical for demonstrating success in the work we do.

In student services, expectations for the assessment of learning are relatively new and many practitioners feel ill-prepared for developing a complex strategy of mapping, integrating, supporting, and assessing learning. Yet the opportunity for demonstrating the impact of services and programs supporting successful student development has never been greater. As professional educators, we have an obligation to assess the learning and development that occurs through our programs and services. Building such capacity is a difficult but necessary process.

This address will consider the how assessment has become a key influence in our professional lives as we respond to stakeholder demands for accountability and improvement. Included will topics such as outcomes based education, evidence-based decision making, building capacity for assessment, common assessment missteps, outcome-based assessment reports, as well as emerging and future trends in assessment.
